Long-distance pricing works differently. Instead of an hourly rate, it’s driven by weight (or cubic footage on the truck) and mileage, plus labor on both ends for loading and unloading. A soldier PCSing from Fort Moore to Fort Bragg near Fayetteville is going to pay differently than a family relocating a full 4-bedroom household down to Orlando, even though both are “long-distance.”

These are estimates for a household with an average amount of furniture. A house that’s light on belongings (or one where you’re only moving part of it and storing or selling the rest) will land at the low end. A garage full of tools, a home gym, and a piano will push you toward the high end.
What Pushes the Price Up
- Stairs and long carries: A third-floor walk-up in a Columbus apartment complex with no elevator adds real time — every box, every trip, up and down. Same goes for a house set back 150 feet from where the truck can park.
- Full-service packing: If you want our crew to pack the kitchen, closets, and garage instead of doing it yourself, that’s additional labor and materials, but it also protects your belongings and saves you a weekend you’ll never get back.
- Specialty items: Pianos, gun safes, and large safes need extra hands, straps, and sometimes a different approach to get through doorways. We quote these separately because they’re genuinely different work.
- Peak season and peak dates: Late May through August is heavy PCS season out of Fort Moore, and the last few days of any month are busy for everyone since leases turn over on the 1st. Booking a mid-month, mid-week date is usually your cheapest option.
- Short-term storage: If your new place isn’t ready and we need to hold your belongings for a week or two, that’s a separate line item, but it’s often cheaper than paying for a double move.
What Brings the Price Down
- Doing your own packing (we still recommend professional packing for anything fragile or for a full-service move, but it’s your call on boxes and closets)
- Decluttering before the move — fewer boxes means fewer hours on a local move and less weight on a long-distance one
- Flexible dates — avoiding the last weekend of the month when everyone in the Valley is trying to move at once
- Combining labor-only loading with a rental truck you book yourself instead of a full-service long-distance move (see our PCS guide for how that works)
Cole’s tip: The single biggest cost driver we see isn’t distance — it’s how much stuff people are paying to move that they don’t actually want anymore. Before your estimate, walk your garage and closets and set aside anything for Goodwill or the curb. We’ve had customers cut a full crew-hour off their local move just by clearing out one overstuffed closet before we showed up.
